The Heat and the Dust: Shopping at Chatuchak Weekend Market

I’ve only mustered up the courage to visit Chatuchak Weekend Market once since moving to Bangkok. It’s definitely not something you can do too often and not for the faint of heart. But it is a pretty awesome experience, so I recommend it to anyone who plans to be here on a Saturday or Sunday.

The most shocking thing about Chatuchak is its size. The space covers 5 football fields, so it’s actually impossible to explore the entire market in one day.

When I went, I pretty much stuck to the home decor section and the plant section because I was looking to spruce up my apartment.

But most of my adventures involved food. Pictured: spicy green mango, strawberries, and deep-fried grasshoppers. Yumm.

Turns out that most shops deliver, which is a good thing if you’re planning on getting home by BTS (skytrain).

As for getting there, it’s at the end of the BTS line (Mo Chit Station) and only takes about 30 mins from the other end of the BTS line (On Nut station). Do not waste precious hours sitting in a taxi!

  1. Whoppee. Can’t wait to arrive with your two little nieces and go do some of this stuff. Do you have the internet connection set up yet at the house now that you have a computer? I really can’t wait to see you. Want to tell you about my trip here to Indiana. I feel as though I fell back in time !! but it is very pretty. Can’t believe we will be there soon and then if all goes well I so hope that Khazana and I can hang out and go to Mussoorie with you even for a brief trip. She will head back with Pragya on 21st of June so nothing too long but a few nice days sitting up there having Chai sounds great. your dad called this afternoon. It was great talking to him!

  3. Seems like I’ve already been to the Chatuchak Weekend Market without ever visiting! I love your photos :) Did you try the deep-fried grasshoppers?

  5. Looks awesome - reckon they could deliver some of the spicy green mango to Saigon? Not sure about those grasshoppers though, last time I had them in Bangkok they were all shells - a bitch to get out of your teeth!
